The King & Royal Family

The Grenadian Royal Family are the family of His Majesty The King, consisting of his wife, children, and siblings. Grenada, being a Commonwealth Realm, shares its Royal Family with the United Kingdom and the other 13 Realms. In all Grenadian contexts however, all members of the Royal Family are Grenadians, and they serve as the Grenadian Royal Family separately from being the British Royal Family

His Majesty The King

Portrait of King Charles III as King of Grenada

His Majesty King Charles III is the King of Grenada. Born on 14 November 1948 he is the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. He is the second monarch of independent Grenada, inheriting the Grenadian throne from his mother upon her death on 8 September 2022. He was crowned as King of Grenada and his other realms at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023, in the presence of Governor-General Dame Cécile La Grenade and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell. As our head of state, the King is vested with important constitutional powers and duties, and all business of government in Grenada is carried out in his name. As such, he has a unique bond with Grenada.

The King’s position as King of Grenada is entirely separate and independent from his position as King of the United Kingdom or of his other 13 realms. The King has the unique distinction of, legally, being 15 separate people. In all Grenadian matters, he acts only as King of Grenada, in accordance with Grenadian ministerial advice and the Grenadian constitution.

My wife and I hold such special memories of our visit to your beautiful ‘Spice Island’ five years ago, and of the warm and touching welcome you extended to us. Then, as whenever I have met Grenadians anywhere in the world, I was struck by your resilience, the strength of your community and by your shared determination to make a positive difference.

The King is well known for his long commitment and engagement with the issue of climate change and the environment. He was one of the first to warn of the dangers to our climate by unsustainable practices, and has always been a champion of small states more vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as Grenada.

The King’s long engagement with charity is another well known facet. In 1976, at the age of 28, he founded the Prince’s Trust, a charitable organisation operating throughout the Commonwealth, including here in the Caribbean. The Prince’s Trust has helped turn the lives of tens of thousands of vulnerable youths around, providing them with purpose and a stable future.

The King’s commitment to charity, the environment, the Commonwealth, the well-being of the young in our society and his implacable political neutrality are the exact sort of things we need in a head of state. At the age of 76, far over Grenada’s pension age, the King continues to serve dutifully and with no plans of slowing down. Much like his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who continued actively serving Grenada until passing at the age of 96, the King’s duty is one for life.

Her Majesty The Queen

Her Majesty Queen Camilla is the wife of the King and as such Queen consort of Grenada. She was born on 17 July 1947, and married the King, then Prince of Wales, in 2005. As the King’s consort rather than monarch herself, the Queen does not hold any constitutional powers, unlike Queen Elizabeth II, who was Grenada’s reigning monarch. The Queen nonetheless serves an important purpose as the King’s spouse, and undertakes ceremonial duties and functions in his name. The Queen accompanied the King during the Royal Visit to Grenada in 2019.

Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales

His Royal Highness Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is the heir to the Throne of Grenada as the eldest son of His Majesty the King. Born on 21 June 1982, the Prince of Wales has served in the British Armed Forces and as an air ambulance pilot, as well as Patron of numerous charitable organisations. The Prince is deeply involved in the Commonwealth and has travelled extensively representing the Crown.

Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, Catherine, is Prince William’s wife and thus future Queen consort of Grenada. Born on 9 January 1982, the Prince and Princess of Wales married in 2011. As the Prince of Wales’ wife, she supports and accompanies him on official engagements and also undertakes royal engagements independently. The couple have 3 children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Their eldest child, Prince George, will some day in the future be King of Grenada.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, is the younger sister of the King. Born on 15 August 1950 she is the second child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The Princess Royal conducts numerous royal engagements on behalf of the King and is patron of many organisations. The Princess Royal has visited Grenada twice.

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh

His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh is the youngest brother of the King. Born on 10 March 1964, he was made Duke of Edinburgh, he title previously held by their father Prince Philip, by the King in 2023. Before this he was known as the Earl of Wessex. The Duke has visited Grenada 3 times, including in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan. He and his wife Sophie were due to visit in 2022 to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, but postponed the visit last minute for unknown reasons. The Duke is patron of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.

Her Royal Highness Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, is Prince Edward’s wife, having married in 1999. They have 2 children together. She joined Prince Edward to Grenada during the 2012 Royal Visit.
