The history of Royal Visits to Grenada, by numerous members of the Royal Family, is a long one, both before and after independence. Royal visits are a way for the Crown and the Royal Family to meet and connect more closely with the peoples of the Commonwealth, and for the host country to share and display their culture, heritage and produce to the world.
Pre-Independence
1880 – King George V and Prince Albert Victor

The first well documented royal visit to Grenada was in January 1880 by Prince Albert Victor and Prince George (the future King George V, grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II). The Princes arrived in Saint George’s on 29 January 1880 on board HMS Bucchante, and were greeted by large crowds of Grenadians. The Princes noted that Grenadians were “dressed up in as many colours as dress will admit of, and as many ornaments as they can carry and still performing”.

The first visit by a reigning monarch to Grenada came in 1966, when Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited Grenada during their tour of the Caribbean. The Queen and Duke drove in an open car through the streets of St. George’s, before conducting a tour of Saint George’s General Hospital. They were subsequently received with an agricultural exhibition at Queen’s Park, which presented the best of Grenada’s produce. Following this, the royal couple drove around Grenada, visiting various villages and parts of the island.
